Microsoft hatte gestern das Update auf Windows 8.1 und Windows RT 8.1 im Windows Store veröffentlicht zum Download bereitgestellt. Zudem stellte der Softwarekonzern für Nutzer die das neue Betriebssystem testen wollen, die Testversion von Windows 8.1 zum Download zur Verfügung. Registrierte Nutzer können damit 90 Tage lang das voll funktionsfähige Windows 8.1 Enterprise testen. Auch findet man im Microsoft Download Center ab sofort das kostenlose Media Feature Pack für die N- und KN-Versionen von Windows 8.1. Windows Media Player sollte eigentlich in Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista und in XP integriert sein, allerdings werden alle N- und KN-Versionen aufgrund einer Auflage der Europäischen Kommission ohne Windows Media Player und andere Multimedia Bestandteile ausgeliefert. Kunden, die die N- und KN-Versionen von Windows 8.1 erworben haben, können nun das Media Feature Pack kostenfrei herunterladen.

Media Feature Pack für die N- und KN-Versionen von Windows 8.1 -> Übersicht
The N and KN editions include the same functionality as Windows 8.1 editions, except for Windows Media Player and related technologies. Impact on other features – Some features aren’t removed but are affected by the media technology removal in the N and KN editions. These include:
- Camera-Over-The-Lock-Screen. This feature doesn’t work.
- Geofencing. This feature doesn’t work.
- App Sync. This feature doesn’t work.
- SkyDrive and Photos. Will be unable to play videos.
- Xbox Games. Some functionality associated with this feature doesn’t work.
- HomeGroup. Integrated media sharing via streaming features don’t work.
- Webcam. This feature doesn’t work.
- Windows 8.1 Mobile devices. There’s no support for media synchronization, image acquisition, or file browsing.
- Windows 8.1 camera devices. Cameras that use the picture transfer protocol (PTP) don’t work.
- Sound Recorder. Recordings are limited to the WAV format.
- Group Policy for removable disks. This feature doesn’t work in the N and KN editions of Windows 8 Pro.
- Sensor and Location Platform. This feature doesn’t work.
- Windows 8.1 N, Windows 8.1 Pro N, Windows 8.1 Enterprise N, or Windows 8.1 KN, Windows 8.1 Pro KN, Windows 8.1 Enterprise KN.
